Hidup mati seseorang tidak ada yang tahu waktunya. Tapi bagaimana rasanya kalau kita ingin bertemu seseorang, tapi dia keburu meninggal? Pasti rasanya menyesal, andai waktu bisa diputar, andai dia mau menunggu, dan andai-andai lainnya. Pada akhirnya, kita cuma bisa mengenang.

Itu jugalah yang dikisahkan oleh Elton John dalam lagunya. Lagu itu didedikasikan untuk mengenang artis “bom seks” Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe. Diceritakan bahwa Marilyn, yang bernama asli Norma Jean, adalah aktris besutan Hollywood. Meski seorang superstar, sosoknya penuh kontroversi, bahkan hingga saat kematiannya pun misterius. Dalam lirik lagu, ia digambarkan seperti “lilin yang tertiup angin”, hidupnya penuh cobaan.

Ya, kenyataannya Elton John memang tidak pernah bertemu Marilyn Monroe. Tentu saja, karena Marilyn meninggal tahun 1962, sedangkan lagu ini baru diciptakan tahun 1973. Pada zaman Marilyn, Elton John masih anak-anak, jadi wajar kalau saat itu dia belum pantas menonton film dewasa. Berangkat dari tema yang “tidak biasa”, lagu ini menjadi salah satu single paling sukses dari Elton John. Sampai sekarang, lagu ini telah dicover banyak penyanyi seperti Sandy Denny, Billy Joel, hingga Ed Sheeran.

Elton John sendiri sempat beberapa kali me-remake “Candle In The Wind” sebagai “tribute” bagi tokoh-tokoh terkenal lainnya. Yang paling terkenal adalah versi yang ditujukan bagi Putri Diana pada tahun 1997. Liriknya mengungkap rasa kehilangan atas wafatnya “England’s Rose”. Seorang putri yang berjiwa sosial tinggi, namun banyak mengalami cobaan dalam hidupnya. Mulai dari perceraian hingga berbagai gosip tentang dirinya.

Inilah hidup…. Tidak selalu mereka yang terkenal dan hidup mewah itu bahagia…  Di dunia banyak cobaan yang membuat hidup bagaikan “lilin tertiup angin”. Yang penting, sekuat apa “lilin” itu berjuang untuk tetap menyala.
